Formation of an F3 layer in the equatorial ionosphere: A result from Strong IMF changes

چکیده
I^^K^ • We analyzed ionospheric observations made with digisondes in Jicamarca, Ramey, Wallops Island, Ascension Island, and Kwajalein Island during the major magnetic storm of November 9-10, 2004 that was associated with rapid interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz changes. The strongest ionospheric responses to the southward IMF Bz turning were observed at the dip equator at Jicamarca where during the magnetic disturbance a dramatic F2 peak density depletion occurred around 1500 local time, accompanied by a fast upward motion of the plasma. In this process, an additional ionospheric layer, the F3 layer, formed with peak densities NmF3 exceeding NmF2. This observation may be considered evidence of an equatorial plasma fountain enhancement caused by the magnetic field disturbance. Responses were observed in a large range of latitudes and local times. The best indicator of the responses appears to be the peak height Corresponding author. Iranian Permanent GPS Network Receivers Differential Code Biases Estimation Using Global Ionospheric Maps
Measurements of the dual frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers can be used to calculate the electron density and the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere layer of the Earth atmosphere. TEC is a key parameter for investigating the ongoing spatial and temporal physical process of the ionosphere. For accurate estimation of TEC from GPS measurements, GPS satellites and GPS r...

متن کاملObservations and model calculations of an additional layer in the topside ionosphere above Fortaleza, Brazil
Calculations using the Sheeld University plasmasphere ionosphere model have shown that under certain conditions an additional layer can form in the low latitude topside ionosphere. This layer (the F3 layer) has subsequently been observed in ionograms recorded at Fortaleza in Brazil. It has not been observed in ionograms recorded at the neighbouring station SaÄ o Luis. Model calculations have s...
متن کاملObservation of vertical electron density profile in inospheric E-layer during Indian-Ocean earthquake on December 2004 using CHAMP satellite
This paper describes the observation and analysis of vertical electron density before major earthquake above the Sumatra-Malaysia region during Indian Ocean major earthquake in 2004 in Aceh, Sumatra. The electron density profile in E-layer of ionosphere a few days before earthquake and a few hours after earthquake have been observed using the data from the CHAMP satellite. The data obtained fro...
متن کاملEISCAT Svalbard radar observations of ionospheric signatures of magnetopause reconnection during a changing IMF BZ polarity
Observations by the EISCAT Svalbard radar are presented that show the response of the spatial structure of the ionosphere in the dayside cusp region to a rotational trend in the IMF clock angle. Over a period of one hour, the clock angle increased from about 45 to some 150, moving the likely location of the magnetopause reconnection site from the high-latitude lobe to near the equatorial plane....
